Free seedlings and seeds at the first Chelsea Farmer’s Market

The Chelsea Area Garden Club will hand out free White Pine, hybrid hazelnut and Serviceberry seedlings, in addition to wildflower seed packets at the first Chelsea Farmers Market, Saturday, May 4th 2024 from 8-1or until supplies run out.

The Eastern White Pine ( Pinus strobus) was adopted as the Michigan State tree on March 4, 1955. These conifers are important for wildlife habitat, nesting, seeds and foliage. The Serviceberry, Alleghany ( Amelanchier laevis), grows in shade or partial shade. This small tree grows 30 to 40 feet tall and spreads 15 to 20 feet. Multiple stems are upright and highly branched forming a dense shrub, or if properly pruned a small tree. Not deer resistant. All species have small, rounded, toothed leaves. Fall leaf color ranges from yellow to red to purple. Flowers are small but showy, and are white in color. The CAGC thanks the Washtenaw Conservation District for donating the seedlings.

The wildflower seed packet contains a blend of 20 wildflowers that provide important habitat and food for pollinators found in Michigan. The flowers provide colorful season-long blooms in the first year and for years to come. This mix contains prairie perennials like Purple Coneflower, Butterfly Weed and Black-Eyed Susan, along with nectar-rich annuals like Red Poppy and Lemon Mint. Perfect for hummingbirds and butterflies.

Each May from 1998-2019, the Chelsea Area Garden Club  hosted an annual plant sale at the Chelsea Fairgrounds. Members potted many interesting plants from their gardens and shared them with the community. Unfortunately, there are no plans to hold a plant sale going forward. We thank our loyal patrons for their past support.
